LINCOLN CENTER INTERIORS

Max Yeston,

Preservationist

The elegant, bejeweled interiors of the Philharmonic Hall (Max Abramovitz, 1962), New York State Theater (Philip Johnson, 1964 (ceiling by Herbert Oppenheimer)) & Metropolitan Opera House (Wallace K. Harrison, 1966) are as inseparable from their stately exteriors as they are from the cultural ethos of 20th & 21st century New York. The spaces, like their exteriors, are notable expressions of the aspirational “monumentality” that Sigfried Giedion, Josep Lluís Sert & Fernand Léger wanted to be infused into mid-century modern architecture.
